NORTH-WEST residents have again reported losing sleep due to an increase in the level and frequency of TasRail train horns.

‘‘It wakes us up in the night and it really interrupts our sleep,’’ Devonport’s Angela Lawson said.
‘‘When it first started our daughter had to have days off school because she wasn’t sleeping.’’
TasRail introduced new measures to reduce the sound of the horns in July, but Ms Lawson said the noise had worsened in the past two weeks.
‘‘Recently we’ve been hearing it at least three times a day,’’ she said.
‘‘They’ve started honking at every crossing. We live a block away from the train line, so I’d hate to think what those on the line think.’’
When the new measures to reduce the noise were implemented, Ms Lawson noticed the difference immediately.
‘‘It calmed down for a while, even the trains seemed different,’’ she said.
‘‘But now it’s gone back to that blast that makes you jump out of your skin.’’
TasRail corporate relations manager Jennifer Jarvis said they had received four complaints in the past two weeks.
She said all complaints were checked against the train’s data, but unless an exact time and place was reported, it was difficult to resolve the problem.
‘‘We commit to downloading all information about the locomotive, which tells us where they were, whether the horn was low or high, how many times it was blown and the duration of the noise,’’ she said.
‘‘If you think the protocol wasn’t complied with, please lodge a complaint with TasRail, including the time and location.’’
Ms Lawson said: ‘‘It’s annoying and sometimes you’ll get renegade drivers. One night a honk lasted for 10 seconds before they stopped, now it’s back and sometimes five seconds long.’’
