Smallest margin enough for double

JOCKEY Kim Moore had the photo-finish camera on her side when she rode the first two winners at Spreyton on Saturday.

Both Moore’s winners scored by the smallest margin in horse racing, a nose.

She started the day by helping perennial placegetter Sheza Fatty Boomba win for the first time in 38 starts in the Hygain Maiden.

Suited by a hectic pace up front, the Graeme McCulloch-trained Sheza Fatty Boomba ran home strongly to just beat outsider Delrianna and the well-backed Made Of Stars ($17 into $7 fixed odds).

Moore followed up with another nail-biting win on Digger’s Dame in the Simons Design Centre (C1) Handicap.

The John Blacker-trained mare collared short-priced favourite Scouting Around in the last stride.

Rhonda Mangan won two of the next three races on Geegees Classicboy and Chips to give the female riders a flying start to the day.

Blacker described Digger’s Dame as a promising mare who would be suited over more ground than Saturday’s 1650 metres.

‘‘I thought she would run well but she will benefit from more distance,’’ Blacker said.

The trainer paid $60,000 for Digger’s Dame as a yearling just after he left Tasmania for a stint in Victoria.

She had been bred by Adam Sangster’s Swettenham Stud and, shortly after the sale, Sangster offered to buy back a half-share.

‘‘The fact that he wanted to keep an interest in the horse made it pretty easy for me to sell other shares,’’ Blacker said.

‘‘She has some very well-known connections including Ron Sayers, who owns a stud in Western Australia.’’

When Blacker decided to return home, his partners in Digger’s Dame were happy for the mare to come to Tasmania to continue her career.

The four-year-old, by Soldier’s Tale from the Redoute’s Choice mare Lanesborough, has now won two of her 10 starts.
