Letters: Food for bigots

29/06/2018 // by admin

It is clear Tony Foot (Mercury, August 14) has no appreciation or understanding of South Africa or its people.

There is no mention that South Africa moved to a black majority government under Nelson Mandela without the mass slaughter of whites despite the atrocities of the apartheid era.

The country is poor and as a consequence crime is a problem.

However, self-government did not bring with it the economic controls and benefits which still remain in the hands of the white minority.

Like many people in areas around Wollongong and Sydney, white South Africans have placed bars on windows and doors, making prisoners of themselves.

Mr Foot’s stereotype view of Middle Eastern Australians just feeds the bigots and has the potential to isolate and marginalise Muslim youth, providing an environment for potential home-grown terrorists.

Rather than demonise and criticise we should support and defend the majority of Muslims trying to guide and bring up their children in a society being hijacked by those wanting to spread hate and fear.
