Wollondilly Council will undergo an organisational restructure in a bid to better accommodate the area’s booming population.
The restructure, approved at last week’s council meeting, will affectively replace the two deputy general manager roles with three directors — director of works and services, director of planning and executive director of community services and corporate support.
With Wollondilly’s population predicted to triple over the next 30-40 years, council general manager Luke Johnson said the new structure was vital.
‘‘The old structure served us well but now we face unprecedented growth pressures,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s one thing for there to be growth but it’s another to have the resources to think about it strategically.
‘‘We need to ensure we are well positioned to manage that growth.’’
A manager of economic development will also be hired on a contractual basis to accommodate for the period of rapid growth.
‘‘We have growth now but we didn’t want to make that a permanent position,’’ Mr Johnson said.
‘‘After a few years we will review whether we need that position or not.’’
Mr Johnson said he expected to advertise for the vacant positions with the next three to four weeks and hoped the new structure would be in place by the end of the year.
Funding for the new positions is expected to come from several sources including: salary savings, additional growth/development income and the possible deferment of some unfilled positions.
Mr Johnson said it was hoped the new positions would be funded within the current budget.
‘‘The decisions we make will impact on Wollondilly for decades to come,’’ he said.
‘‘We have a responsibility to get it right for future generations.’’
